Unless you have a ton of money, and we're talking a lot, having health insurance is more than just smart, it's a necessity. With the Affordable Care Act, everyone is required to have health insurance and you may incur a penalty if you don't. While no one plans to get sick or injured, most people will need medical care at some point. That coupled with the fact that health insurance covers preventative care as well—makes it that much more essential.
Many people feel like because they're healthy now, spending money on health coverage is a waste. Unfortunately, the majority of medical expenses are unexpected and health issues, minor or major, can occur quickly and without much warning.
Choosing the right individual health plan can be tedious, who actually reads every single thing on the forms and plan policies anyway? That being said, understanding a few key points can help you make the right decision when choosing your policy.
Here are some things to consider when shopping for your health insurance plan:
1. While you don't know when or if you'll suddenly become ill or injured, you can and should figure out things that are foreseeable and anticipate your medical needs. For example, if you plan to start a family, make sure that maternity coverage is offered in your policy. Also, consider your family history and use that as a guide for things you make sure are covered... such as preventative services for heart disease, cholesterol-lowering drugs, blood pressure tests, cancer, diabetes and so on. Being proactive with these and other hereditary conditions can make all the difference in the world.
2. If you have a physician or specialist you like, make sure they're in the network of any plan before you buy it. You can easily check which insurance your doctor takes before you purchase your policy. Out-of-network visits are generally not covered or only a small portion of the total bill is covered, so knowing your preferred physician is in network is critical.
3. Choose a policy you can afford, not something that will break your bank, and always know your share of the costs. Insurance plans are required to tell you how much you’ll pay out of pocket, whether it's flat fees or copays. Make sure you're comfortable with what you're required to pay.
4. If you take any medications, make sure they're covered in your plan.
5. Check out several plans. While it takes just a few minutes to get the gist of the main benefits with each plan—look at them carefully and analyze what plan make the most sense for you
